How Is This Clinic Different From Most?
In the United States, most acupuncture treatment is delivered in private rooms and patients are charged $50 - $200 per visit. Some insurance plans cover this, but most don't. Besides, many of us don't even have health insurance. Many people who would like to receive acupuncture treatment simply can't afford it, especially since acupuncture is most effective when received weekly for the first 6 - 10 weeks.
In an effort to deliver effective, affordable acupuncture, The Community Acupuncture Network is promoting a model for treatment based on clinics in China. By treating several people in the same large, comfortable room, the practitioner can monitor everyone and we can reduce the cost of individual treatments. There is no need for insurance when the cost of treatment is about the cost of an insurance co-pay.
What is a Visit to the Clinic Like?
We ask you to arrive about 20 minutes before your first appointment is scheduled to fill out paperwork, including a health history. Your initial consultation is in a private room and includes an in- depth interview and your first acupuncture treatment. We review your health history and we discuss your concerns. Then the practitioner inserts some needles and you relax. This whole process takes about an hour.
After the first visit, you are treated in the common room. Since we already know quite a bit about your condition, the practitioner only needs to ask you a few questions, to look at your tongue and to feel your pulses to know where to place the needles. After that - you lay back and relax for 30 to 45 minutes while, once again, the needles do their work.
There is soft music playing in the clinic and the atmosphere is tranquil. There may be up to four people in recliners in the large community room at any one time. Healing has been shown to be more effective in group settings. Some patients like to come to the clinic for treatment with other family members, friends, and co-workers.
Is This The Same Treatment I Would Get in A Private Office?
Yes it is. There are many forms of acupuncture. This form uses points mostly on the arms and legs and torso so we are able to treat you in recliners. (SO - please wear loose clothing so we can reach your knees and elbows). Occasionally we will ask you to come back to a private room so that we can put you on a massage table to place needles in your back.
In a private practice, the practitioner may spend more time talking with you before placing needles, but the actual needle placement is the same. Many patients actually prefer to have more time resting with the needles rather than talking. The resting time is relaxing, and many choose to meditate or sleep.
But if you are a person who would rather have the longer conversation with your practitioner, we may be able to accommodate you with a private hour-long session. Naturally, this session will be more expensive because we are dedicating the entire hour to just you. And - if we are unable to schedule a private appointment, there are many fine acupuncturists in private practice in Gainesville and we are happy to provide referrals if you need one.
